What Can I Do with an MTS Degree?

An MTS can enhance your work in Christ’s kingdom. From pastors to nonprofit leaders to missionaries, your ministry will be deepened and strengthened through the foundational work of an MTS degree. Some students go on to complete a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Master of Theology (ThM) program after completing their MTS degree.

There are two ways to study Greek and Hebrew at GBRU.

Students can take two 3-credit courses (Fall & Spring semesters), memorizing grammar and vocabulary, with the goal of being able to translate text with a low level of help from resources. Another option is to take one 3-credit course, where students learn to translate text with the help of a digital tool to help them with grammar and vocabulary.

MTS Degree Courses & Credit Hours.

The MTS program encompasses 55 credits and takes two to three years to complete. Core Courses: 30 credits Additional Core Options: 6 credits (chosen from the options below) Elective Courses: 19 credits On Campus & Online Residential students can complete their studies in two years at the GBRU campus. They will be able to attend weekly chapels, participate in club activities, and interact with peers daily. Our three-year distance learning options maintain the same high quality of education as our residential program. Taking approximately three courses per semester, distance learning students may a) engage in a hybrid model of learning, completing much of their work online and traveling to campus twice a year for five-day intensives, or b) work fully online toward their degree.

Vocational Formation & Contextual Learning

MTS students are invited to use the resources of the Vocational Formation Office—from church and ministry connections to spiritual and vocational tools for growth and assessment.


The 55-credit MTS program takes two years for residential students and three years for hybrid distance students to complete.


The MTS is designed to prepare you for further academic study and careers that are enriched by a strong theological education.

The seminary’s faithful community of supporters ensures that tuition reduction is available for all our students. Many also receive scholarship support to make their seminary goals a reality.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis, but international students are encouraged to apply as early as possible to coordinate all necessary forms.

What is the Difference

The Master of Theological Studies (MTS) offers foundational study in theology through an extensive 2–3-year program. Once you have completed your MTS degree, you are eligible to pursue the next-level Master of Theology (ThM) program.
